Jazz Band Rhythm Guitar

This guide, published by Mel Bay, provides guitarists with the basic information needed to function within a jazz band. While jazz is played on the same instruments as other types of music, it has its own language - and this book functions as an introduction to that language. Beginning with swing and shuffle, the book builds upon earlier chapters to cover bebop and Latin. If you have a basic working knowledge of the guitar through rock, blues, or folk, this book will produce immediate and gratifying results. The clarity and insight of this method make it a "must have" for any jazz performer.

Released in July 1999, the Jazz Band Rhythm Guitar is available from Mel Bay

Bruce is an excellent teacher. His video, Solo Jazz Guitar, takes students beyond the fundamental mechanics of harmony and melody into a global overview of approching improvisation. Includes a booklet with examples and corresponding numbers on-screen. Although the video focuses on the guitar, any instrumentalist will gain tremendous insight into the workings of jazz improvisation from this genuine master whose sophisticated harmonic and melodic senses have been widely praised by other musicians.

Solo Jazz Guitar is available by mail order from GSP Productions.

For those who want a thorough and global grounding in jazz mechanics, Bruce's book Jazz Guitarist's Handbook is at the same time the most comprehensive and most clear overview of the elements of jazz harmony and melody available. In addition to instrumental basics and practice advice, the book covers such arcane issues as voice leading, tritone substitution, deceptive cadences and intervallic root motion, all expounded with the clarity and simplicity only a true master can employ.
